The   DELF   and   DALF Examinations

The "Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française" (DELF) and the "Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française" (DALF) are national diplomas awarded by the Ministry of Education. These diplomas consist of individual examinations called credits and can be taken in a number of different countries. They officially certify a specified level of knowledge and command of the French language by foreign students. Holders of the DALF need no other French entrance exam to be admitted to French universities.
The DELF in 2 stages: 1st & 2nd levels (6 credits):
The DELF 1st level: 4 credits (A1 to A4) this diploma certifies that students can communicate in everyday French.
The DELF 2nd level: 2 credits (A5 and A6) Holders of this diploma show good knowledge of French culture and are able to
analyze texts and give oral or written commentaries.

DELF 1st Level (A1 TO A4)
A1: General oral and written skills
     Oral 1: presentation on a subject relating to everyday life
     Oral 2: dialogue simulation
     Written 1: a short story linked to time and place
     Written 2: a written reply to an invitation or to a request for an appointment

A2: Expressing ideas and feelings
     Oral 1: presenting and defending opinions on controversial subjects
     Oral 2: presenting a commentary on a document
     Written 1: understanding and analyzing opinions in documents
     Written 2: writing text about one's feelings or opinions

A3: Analyzing texts and written skills
     Oral: analyzing a simple text and replying to questions
     Written 1: reading comprehension with questions
     Written 2: writing a letter of enquiry

A4: Further practice of oral and written language
     Oral: language structures, phonetics, rhythm, intonation
     Written: practice of written language - reading comprehension and written skills

DELF 2nd Level (A5 and A6)

A5: Culture and civilization
     Oral 1: conversation on a chosen subject - work, transport, studies, institutions, cultural activities
     Oral 2: presenting a topic, relating to French culture and making comparisons with the candidate's native           country
     Written: commenting a text (500-700 words)
A6: Specialized French
    Oral 1: commenting a text in the candidate's chosen field - humanities, social sciences, law, economics, mathematics, science, medicine
     Oral 2: discussion about this text

The DALF

The DALF certifies that the students can master all the various oral and written skills (summarizing, analyzing, oral presentations)
required in their specialized area of study:

     humanities and social science

     literature
